Ms. Marlene Green Obituary

Family Matriarch, Prayer Warrior, Nurturer, and Soldier for the Lord … these are just a few
characteristics to describe our beloved Mother Marlene Green. She was born in Jakin, Georgia,
on March 17, 1937, the eldest child of the late Johnny and Kizzie Hicks Green.

Educated in Early County schools, she earned a living as a factory worker, housekeeper, and a
caretaker before retiring in the early nineties. She was baptized into the body of Christ at an
early age, and faithfully reverenced Him all her days. When asked what she was most proud of
in life, Mother Green responded: “I am most proud of taking care of children, cooking for
people, housekeeping, my church, and showing people love despite all.”

She served her beloved Midway Missionary Baptist Church for more than 60 years in various
capacities: as church mother, head of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry, Financial Secretary, Sunday
School Superintendent, Ladies Aid Society member, Sunday School Convention representative,
and chair of various church programs. As a member of the building fund committee, she
contributed to the expansion of Midway’s historical edifice, with the addition of central air and
heating, a dining area, bathrooms, new pews and pulpit furniture, a baptism pool, and a pastor’s
study, among other improvements. Mother Green especially treasured the opportunities to cook
and serve meals for the pastor and family after Sunday services.

For all the work Mother Green did for the church, she was most influential in her home, where
she hosted numerous friends and family gatherings and holiday events. There was never a
shortage of food, no matter how hungry people were. She was a pillar of the community and a
pivotal member of many “villages” as the guardian for several family members’ and neighbors’
children. With an infectious laugh and caring heart, she always extended a helping hand to
anyone in need, even if her needs were greater.

After a valiant fight, Mother Green departed this earth and earned her eternal wings on
Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021. She experienced great peace surrounded by family and
friends in her final days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings:
Oscar Green, Johnny Green Jr., James Henry Green, Edward Green, Martha Byrd, and Christine
Barnhill.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory five children: Eddie Hunter Jr. (Jean), Earlene Powell,
Pearlene Garner, Shenetha Keaton (James), and Vallaree Blake; five siblings: Mary Orange,
Bernice Green, Linda Leonard, Jim Holland, and Mae Brown; 20 grandchildren, 42 great-
grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and
friends.
